$1 - GENERAL RULES OF THE CHALLENGE
Point 1.1
The challenge of the B.I.G. bases itself on a fixed list of 1.000 numbers. These 1.000 numbers correspond to 1.000 summits that cyclists named precisely in an official list called "lists of the 1.000" and specified in locations and given data or literature in the official guide called "Passacol".
Point 1.2
If a member has climbed on a day in his life, on a bicycle, and that WHATEVER THE ROUTE CHOSEN (among the sides described in the Passacol), to a summit corresponding in the list to a number among the 1.000: he can declare, by honour, the success of achieving the climb corresponding to this number. He can proclaim his previous successes for the first time on the inscription form at any moment of the year. For a member already registered the updated new successes of the current year in the classifications he declares it afterwards via the page of the number that he wants to claim .
Point 1.3
When a member proclaims the past success of a number, this is for all his life. He claims the number if he ascended the summit, corresponding to the moment of the declaration of the number achieved. If after that, the name of the climb is amended to another climb, he would still preserve the success of climbing this number.
Point 1.4
A member is registered as soon as he sends by his honour, his first list of numbers between 1 and 1.000; corresponding to the summits that are already climbed up to this point in his life. The BIG reserves itself the right to request the date back to the successes in the case of possible claim abuse if it is evident that the claimant appears too confident and the B.I.G will refuse the inscription in this extreme case.
Point 1.5
If the registered member declared less than ten numbers, then he is placed in the list of the said members "in waiting". The member becomes possessor of the "welcoming patent" BIG, as soon as he proclaims a minimum of 10 different numbers. He will become possessor of the ranks, of BIG01 to BIG20, alongside his life as a cyclo-climber, according to the following progression:
BIG01>= 30; BIG 02>= 60; BIG03>= 90; BIG04>= 120; BIG05>= 164
BIG06>= 240; BIG07>= 300; BIG08>= 360; BIG09>= 430; BIG10>= 500
BIG 11>= 550; BIG12>=600; BIG13>= 650; BIG14>= 700; BIG 15>= 750
BIG16>= 800; BIG17>= 850; BIG18>= 900; BIG19>= 950; BIG20>= 1.000
Point 1.6
The member becomes "Winner of the BIG" when he has attained 164 different numbers (in memory of Raymond Mayeur, deceased at this score), with a minimum of 10 different countries.
The member becomes "Winner of the BAG" when he has attained 500 successful ascensions. He receives then the Patent of the BAG (Adventurous Cyclo-climber) if its summits are divided up in to at least twenty different countries and three different continents outside Europe (that means North-America; South-America, Africa, Asia and Oceania).
The member becomes "Winner of the BEG" when he has attained 1.000 successful ascensions. He must have at least one ascension in each continent. He receives then the Patent of the BEG (Extreme Cyclo-climber).

$3. DETERMINING THE 1.000 SUMMITS OF THE B.I.G. LIST
Point 3.1
The 1.000 summits are presented according to 12 series and were selected since the origin of the tournament according to athletic, media criteria or touristic criteria, via the specialized and renowned managed regional knowledge but must follow the big-method explained in the following page :
http://bigascensions.free.fr/big-method.htm
The 12 series have a determined quota
• 01 Nordic countries 50 - 02 Great Britain 50 - 03 Benelux 50 - 04 Germany 50
• 05 France 175 - 06 Spain & Portugal 150 - 07 Switzerland 75 - 08 Austria 75
• 09 Italy 150 - 10 Carpathians & eastern European countries 50 - 11 Balkans & islands 75 - 12 Remainder of the world 50
Point 3.2
The 50 climbs of the zone 12 and the last 10 climbs of the zone 10, called outside Europe, will never be determined by the Selection Committee of the BIG, but at the discretion of the member. The following restrictions are to follow *:
a) Among those 50 climbs, we need to find 10 in Asia, 10 in Africa, 10 in Oceania, 10 in North or Central America, and finally 10 in South America & 10 in Ex-USSR(866-875).
b) The average slopes (altitude difference between the top and the height of the foot) should be at least 500m by number of ascents by continent (a total of 5000m by continent and minimum of 25000 for the zone 12).
each BIGs claimed must have a difference of altitude from top to foot >= 500m
example Top of n 951 = 675 and Foot of n 951 = 124 is OK Difference of altitude is 675 - 125 = 551 (>500)
Top of nr 991 = 675 and Foot of nr 991 = 176 is NOK Difference of altitude is 675 - 176 = 499 (< 500) but to allow some special climb with high gradients with a difference of altitude < 500, there is the average rule.
Average rule is by continent. example
Top of nr 951 = 675 and Foot of nr 951 = 124 is OK Difference of altitude is 675 - 125 = 551
Top of nr 952 = 675 and Foot of nr 952 = 176 is OK Difference of altitude is 675 - 176 = 499 because you declare 2 climbs from the same continent and sum of difference of altitude by continent divided by number of climbs declared by continent >=500 (551 + 499) / 2 = 525 (> 500)
Climbs with average's rule will appear in the results with * behind the names
c) The member declaring a number of 951 to 1000 (zone 12) has therefore imperatively to accompany his declaration by: the name of the continent, the country, the name of the top reached, the height of this top, the named of the foot where was the start, the elevation of this foot, the year of completion and send it to the manager of the zone 12 for acceptance. * Exceptions are allowed for climbs claimed before 2009 and following former regulations.
Point 3.3
The improvement of the balance between the 3 criteria (sport, tourism and media) leads to 5 main principles for any coming change inside the superlist.
1st principle : the bigs must be dispatched in the more possible different mountainous regions
2nd principle : some bigs must help to discover the natural and cultural tourism
3rd principle : some bigs must be sporting climbs but the overview of the bigs must show an average balance of difficulty
4th principle : some bigs must help to discover the main climbs included in the cycling history
5th principle : the bigs must be mainly surfaced roads, giving some place to gravelled roads only when they give obviously an additional interest.
A single change can be requested by sending a mail to newlist@challenge-big.eu . The "filter group" will analyze the request, ask you to fill a formular and eventually suggest it one time a year to the judges of the list for a vote (agreement or not).
$4. ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES
A. THE IRONBIG25 (godfathers)
- claim 25 times one number inside the whole year,
- but if the difference of level is less than 500m, to claim it 25 times inside only 1 month
- if the difference of level is less than 200m, to claim it 25 times inside only 1 day
prevent by email president@challenge-big.eu that you'll try a precise number in the list
claim by the same way the dates of your success, little by little or in one time.
You'll become the godfather of this BIG and your name will be written in the descriptions'pages of this climb forever as the godfather for life of this BIG
B. NATIONAL CHALLENGES
The " national challenges", with a "stamp BIG", are freely managed by the national managers who decided the rules and the amount of climbs selected in their own country but must follow the big-method explained in the following page :
